Aquatic Site Maintenance

Waterfrontage

Living on a waterfront property is a dream come true for a select few property owners. With owning a waterfront property becomes a life style, freedom and tranquil surroundings as well as dealing with mother-nature.

Aquatic plants will naturally establish themselves in any waterway just like weeds in a garden and will require some form of maintenance just like a lawn.

Most waterfront properties within residential developments are man made to some extent and are required to retain stormwater runoff from the properties around the waterway.

These waterways provide a specific function of retaining water in periods of high rainfall. Because of this, these waterways will never obtain the water clarity of mountain streams and will always require some form of maintenance.

Aquatic Site Maintenance has listed a number of DO's and DON'T's that will help waterfront property owners reduce their impact on their aquatic surrounds.

DO Bag all grass clippings. Grass clippings and other leaf litter from your garden will decompose in the water and can turn into algae in as little as 48 hours.

DO Dispose of all pet waste properly. Do not allow any pet waste to enter the aquatic environment. Animal waste is just like fertilizer and it promotes prolific weed growth.

DO Wash you car on your front lawn or at a car wash and not on the street where the detergents can wash into the storm water catchments and flow into your aquatic environment.

DON'T Dispose of any chemicals, cooking oils, non biodegradable detergents or rubbish down drains as they will just end up in the stormwater catchments and flow into your aquatic environment.

DON'T Use fertiliser within 4 meters of the waters edge. Extra nutrients promote prolific algae and aquatic weed growth.
